The Health of The Mind
The most important aspect of health is the health of the mind. From here all other actions, habits and behavior proceed, whether healthful or harmful.

The health of the body is dependent on the health of our mind. Our mind is where emotions stem from and those emotions have a very real physical effect on our body. What we let into our mind determines our thoughts. Our thoughts determine our conduct. Our conduct is tied to our level of self-control. That self-control determines what we choose to put into our body. What we put into our body impacts the state of our health.
This is because what we let into our mind and how we’re feeling (mindset) also effects how our body uses what we put inside it. Whether or not the nutrients we take in are properly utilized, shuttled to the right destination or properly broken down and converted into the right form to be of benefit to us. Our emotions have a significant impact on the functioning of our internal organs, our digestion and the circulation of our blood. Our emotions come from our mental state; our mind. Tamryn Burgess of Honestly Holistic explains this in an article entitled Just Let It Go: The Overlooked Connection of Emotions, Mentality and Physical Health. She points out that anger and frustration have an effect on the liver and the gallbladder, how grief and sadness can affect the lungs, how worry and anxiety affects the stomach and how fear affects the kidneys. These emotions come from the mind. What goes into our mind even determines how we hold ourselves and how we move. Our posture, stance, gait and the movements we perform are all a result of what we’ve learned, been conditioned for, what we’ve trained for and how we’re feeling. All a function of the mind.
Our mind is responsible for anything that exists in reality. It takes abstract ideas such as passion, conviction, motivation and desire and manifests them in the real world. What do you want to do in life?
Write a book? You must think to do that.
Build a house? You must think to do that.
Eat better? You must think to do that.
Take a vacation? You must think to do that.
Get stronger? You must think to do that.
Proverbs 13:19 (NKJV) says “A desire accomplished is sweet to the soul…”
Because that’s a dream becoming a reality.
When you save up and buy that car or house; that’s your dream coming into existence. When a man gets the woman he’s been pursuing; that’s your dream becoming a reality. When you lose the weight you’ve been trying to or put on the muscle you’ve been trying to gain; that’s your passion and discipline, quite literally, in physical form. Truly, nothing would exist without it first entering into the mind. And when you keep the mind focused on that desire until it’s accomplished and you can physically see and touch the results, that is sweet to the soul.
On another level, what we let into our mind determines our character. Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV) says “Keep [guard] your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.” The heart is another term for the mind. Since the mind (heart) is where our thoughts, and thus our beliefs, our values, and morals dwell, this is also where our character resides. It is these things that make up our character. This is also where our spirituality resides. For the mind is our character and our character is our spirit. The mind, heart and spirit are all one and the same.
Specifically, the frontal lobe of our brain is where higher level thinking takes place, such as reasoning and impulse control. This is the doorway of our mind. When you realize this, you will realize how important it is to guard yourself from what you hear, see and do.
Dr. Eric Walsh gave a presentation at the 2021 AMEN (Adventist Medical Evangelism Network) Conference in October discussing the importance of guarding our minds. He discussed the frontal lobe of the brain and what takes place at this gateway:
You must protect your mind from anything that has an impure and detrimental influence on you because this degrades the character, intellect and the body. Certain television programs, social media, music, gossip and negative speaking; all these have an influence on the body and mind, ultimately affecting health and character.
He pointed out:
There have been EEG studies that demonstrate that television watching converts the brain from beta wave activity to alpha waves, which are associated with a daydreaming state, and a reduced use of critical thinking skills.
He also quotes Eric Braverman, Founder and president of Path Foundation NY, a nonprofit research organization devoted to brain health, as saying:
Television mesmerizes people and turns them into intellectual spectators. It feeds passivity and makes you less engaged.
This means that while you’re watching these television shows you are not optimally capable of reasoning. This makes it difficult to reason from cause to effect, distinguish truth from error, be able to perceive intentions and motives or to think deeply and question why or how something is being done or said. The mind numbing effect that the news media and violent and explicit shows have on our minds can be clearly seen in society around us. But you must turn off the TV, observe and critically think. Even common sense is stripped away and things that don’t make any sense from any perspective (scientifically, mathematically or logically) are accepted. And even worse, things that are objectively reprehensible are tolerated and pushed into the minds of the population until wrong becomes right. Content such as sexually explicit material have a demoralizing effect and even physically shrink the brain. A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Psychiatry entitled Brain Structure and Functional Connectivity Associated With Pornography Consumption astonishingly showed reduced gray matter in individuals who regularly viewed pornography.
Even the company you choose to keep has an effect on you. Whatever goals you have (those desires you have in your heart and mind) can be furthered or hindered depending on who you surround with. You can’t always control your environment and who’s in it, but whenever it is within your control, make sure it’s conducive to your goals and in line with your principles. Doing this will build integrity and you will have the strength of mind to hold fast to your principles any time it isn’t.
Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”
-Proverbs 15:33
Our physical health, character and our spiritual nature are determined first and foremost by our mental diet. And if you know there is something after this life and that our eternal destination is determined by how we lived this life, then you know what we allow through the gate of our conscience also determines our eternity.
Get your mind right. Get your body right. Get your soul right.
-Proverbs 3:8, Proverbs 14:30, Ephesians 4:23
