Things to Know to Keep You on the Path to Your Goals and Good Health
Valuable tips for your living well journey
Soak raw beans, legumes, lentils, whole grains, nuts & seeds overnight to reduce the phytic acid and anti-nutrients. Then drain, rinse and cook or pressure cook for a healthier more nutrient bioavailable meal.
For you Kosher folks out there or those that just want to drain the blood from your meat before cooking, soak the meat overnight just as you would beans, grains or nuts. Pour out the water and rinse the meat and cook as normal. The water will be blood red (or pinkish if poultry)as all or most of the blood will easily seep into the water and be ready to pour out in the morning.
Save the liquid from sprouted (germinated), pressure cooked or overnight soaked and drained then cooked beans for a homemade high protein drink. Saves money on protein shakes and you can either spice and salt and enjoy as a soup or sweeten with raw honey or other healthy sweetener and enjoy as you would a protein shake. If you want to remove any sediment run the liquid through a strainer to get a smoother drink. Or keep it in there for a heartier even protein-ier drink. Don't have a strainer? All good. Let the liquid sit in a jar or bowl for a few hours or overnight and the particulates will settle at the bottom. Then pour the liquid into a different container being careful not to get too close to the bottom where the particulates are and stopping before they start to come out with the liquid. Viola! You have a smooth sediment free protein drink! Save the remaining paste-like sediment to put into another smoothie, your oatmeal, yogurt, mix with honey or sea salt, cook or bake into your waffles, pancakes, spread over your bread...you get the idea. You can use in endless nutritious ways!
Food for personal care? We’ve all heard of avocado masks and coconut oil hair treatments. Here’s another one if you haven’t heard. Save the coffee grounds from your brew of coffee to use as a face or scalp scrub. This is great for stimulating circulation and for exfoliation. Scrub gently in a massaging circular motion with long strokes and wide circles. Being too vigorous can scratch you. Be sure to use organic coffee and use grounds brewed in a coffee maker using a filter so you don't get any nasty chemicals from the plastic that touched the hot coffee grounds. Also, it can stain surfaces so be sure to use inside the shower or put an old towel or plastic bag down in the sink.
Be careful with the Keto diet. It can work as long you stay in a caloric deficit or within your body's energy needs. The moment you go beyond that you can find yourself packing on the weight pretty fast. Dietary fat is the first thing to be stored as body fat the moment you consume more than you need. Know what your maintenance needs are and eat below that. You need to be tracking or you'll be getting bigger not smaller.
The answer to staying truly hydrated is eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables which have naturally structured water full of minerals and electrolytes. Chugging regular plastic bottled water (even if it's fancy) will actually end up dehydrating you more and that's frustrating. "But I'm drinking like a gallon of water a day!" Yes, I know. It's the wrong type of water. Drink bottled water when you need to if you're thirsty and that's what you have. No need to go all cotton mouth because it's not mineral water. Just also try to get 6+ servings of fruits and veggies every day and limit high sodium and ultra processed foods. Coconut water and adding some lemon/lime and a pinch of sea salt can help too and can be added to any water to make it more hydrating. Water, water pants on fire...they shouldn't be if you're staying hydrated ;)
Confused about nutrition labels and don't have a nutritionist to take around with you🙋🏻♂️? *Ahem! Cough, cough* The Yuka app will change and save your life. I'm just going to leave that there.
When you're stressed STAY NOURISHED. Stress depletes nutrients. You need more minerals, electrolytes, B vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids, healthy fats...more everything when you're under any type of stress. This can make a big difference in your ability to cope, handle it and bounce back.
Don't buy unhealthy food to keep in your home. That way you won't even have the ability to eat unhealthy even if you get the urge. You will only have to rely on willpower when you're out and you'll have more of it whenever you do have to exercise some willpower.
Already bought some unhealthy food to keep in the house and don't want to waste it? I get it, you want to eat better now but don't want your hard earned money to go down the drain. If you don't want to give it away then just eat it with something healthy to offset any harm it might do. Eat it with fruit, vegetables, leafy greens (candy corn in your salad anyone?) whole grains, nuts & seeds, or a high quality source of protein such as a lean meat, beans, or legumes. Just don't eat something unhealthy by itself or with other unhealthy food and get the full wrath of the junk food. That’s a double, triple, or quadruple whammy depending on what and how much you’re eating.
Eating 5-6 grams (about 1 tsp) of spirulina or glycine (a sweet tasting amino acid with numerous health benefits) or both can reduce the negative effects of rancid or low quality industrial conventional vegetable oils and fried food when eaten after a meal. Raw carrots can do the same thing. If you're expecting to go out or have a cheat meal, plan ahead and bring some of these things with you in a bag or container to have on hand when you're indulging or just can't say no.
Don't go shopping when you're hungry. It can turn into a processed food and junk food disaster. Eat a healthy meal or have something in your stomach so you can keep your dietary wits about you.
Always have something baking in the oven. Understand this is not a cooking hack, but a life lesson for preparation, foresight and productivity .
Never before has our soil, water and food supply been so depleted and full of toxins. Not only have we stripped the earth and our food of essential nutrients, but we replaced them with chemicals that kill bugs fast and us slowly. What in the world were we thinking? As a result, supplements are the way of the future. BUT they need to be clean and pure and free of the chemicals and additives that make our commercial food supply so toxic and disease-inducing. Otherwise, you’re no better off.
I started this Substack to share health and wellness information with a sick and struggling world (and because it is a safe haven for uncomfortable truths largely silenced elsewhere). I don’t know a better way to reach more people in a such a short amount of time than to be able to share (and acquire) knowledge with the click of a button at the speed of light. Perhaps there is reason why we live in the times in which we do.
While I will always offer information for free, it does take time, effort and resources to put together information to hopefully help others live and feel better on their journey to health. I have been helped myself by the information others have shared. Additional links and resources will be included in every post. If you would like to support my work and mission of bringing valuable information to others or you feel any of these additional resources will help you or someone else, I would be grateful if you would consider taking advantage of any of these resources. I am always working to bring you new content as much and as often as I’m able.
God bless and I wish you Health, Wealth & Happiness
